Unite the Union United Kingdom United Kingdom Website Salary (OTE/pro-rata): undisclosed Unite the Union is the largest trade union in the UK with over 2 miliion members in every kind of workplace from factories and offices to hospitals and universities. We are the premier union whether you work in the public, private or voluntary sector with membership extending to banks, local authorities, education, health, manufacturing and charities. Our strength comes from our size, this means: - We continue to negotiate better terms and conditions in workplaces; - You will get advice and representation if you have a problem at work; - We have a powerful political video; - We campaign in the UK and internationally for greater equality and the strengthening of workers' rights. Unite would like to see more LGBT people to join and become active in the union. Those that join will have access to a wide range of information through our website, workplace representatives and offices throughout the country. They will have someone to turn to if they have an issue or need representation at work. They can be confident that where Unite is recognised for collective bargaining that we are negotiating the best terms and conditions at work. Those that become active as representatives will have access to training and guides that will ensure that they are competent and confident in their role. There is still much work to be done to combat homophobia and transphobia and to achieve equality in the workplace for LGBT workers. Unie has highlighted that many employers and workers are not aware of LGBT rights. Depsite the legal advances, prejudice still persists and LGBT workers still face harassment and discrimination in the workplace. It is key that LGBT members have a voice and are active in the union. Unite has LGBT Commitees in each region, a National Commitee and a confidential network which helps to inform reps on issues affecting LGBT people at work. These play a vital role in ensuring that LGBT members are actively involved in developing union policy, campaigning and action in this area. As a union, we exert a big influence at government level, with employers and campaign in communities for improvements to LGBT rights. We can and are making a different and would like to see more LGBT members getting involved and take part in working towards equality in the workplace. |
