unnamed-3Same-sex marriage was made legal across all 50 of the United States on Friday 26th June 2015, after a historic supreme court ruling that declared attempts by conservative states to ban marriage for same-sex couples as unconstitutional.

The decision was made with five of the nine court justices ruling that the right to marriage equality was covered by the 14th amendment, in what is sure to become one of the most important civil rights cases in LGBT history - Obergefell v Hodges.

Neal Katyal, Co-Head of Hogan Lovells Appellate Practice and former United States Solicitor General said: "The United States Supreme Court has issued a profound, life changing decision today. It may be the most consequential decision by the Court in a generation or more. The Court powerfully reaffirmed the equal dignity of all to marry today; and this is a decision that will be read hundreds of years from now."
